A threat to the region. The State Department responds to the mining of Zaporizhzhia NPP
The Deputy Assistant Secretary of the US Department of State, Vedant Patel, expressed his concern over the military actions near the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which is under the control of Russian forces. This poses a serious threat to the entire region.
Patel noted that the United States demands an immediate halt to such operations.
"Aggressive and unpredictable behavior in the immediate vicinity of a nuclear facility, in this case a nuclear power plant, is extremely dangerous," Patel emphasized.
In this way, he expressed the US position on the information from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) about the discovery of mines and explosives on the territory of the Zaporizhzhia NPP, which is under the control of the Russian military.
Patel emphasized that this situation poses an immediate risk to the entire region.
Explosion hazard at ZNPP: known facts
The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was seized by the Russian military in March 2022. Since then, they have constantly obstructed the work of Ukrainian specialists on site by intimidating, kidnapping, and forcing them to sign contracts with Rosatom.
On June 22, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia was considering a terrorist attack on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant it had seized and had "thought through everything to the smallest detail."
