Indian Prime Minister Modi and Ukrainian President Zelenskyy in Kyiv, August 23, 2024.
Ukraine and India have agreed on four documents in the medical, agricultural, humanitarian, and cultural spheres. A joint statement on the content of the visit to build a strategic partnership between Ukraine and India has been prepared
This was stated by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy at a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 23, a Suspilne correspondent reports.
Zelensky called Modi's visit to Kyiv historic. This is the first visit of an Indian prime minister to independent Ukraine, and it took place on the Day of the National Flag of Ukraine, on the eve of Independence Day.
The parties agreed on a number of cooperation projects:
“This is the medical sector, this is cooperation in agriculture, this is humanitarian relations, this is culture. And a joint statement has been prepared on the content of the Prime Minister's visit regarding the development of a strategic partnership between our countries, trade between our countries, and military-technical cooperation. All this should be strengthened,” Zelenskyy said.
He thanked Modi and the people of India for 16 humanitarian aid packages to Ukraine during the full-scale invasion, as well as for supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Modi replied that the most important way to solve problems is through dialogue and diplomacy and urged to follow this path immediately. According to the official, India is ready to provide proactive support for peace, to play its role for peace.
Modi made similar remarks the day before in Warsaw at a meeting with Prime Minister Donald Tusk: “India firmly believes that no conflict or problem can be solved on the battlefield. The loss of innocent lives in any crisis is the greatest challenge to all humanity, and that is why we support dialogue and diplomacy to quickly restore peace and stability.”
Earlier, Modi said that during his visit to Kyiv he would share “perspectives” on a peaceful resolution of the “conflict” between Ukraine and Russia. According to the sources of the Hindustan Times, the Indian side has ruled out any direct mediation role between Ukraine and Russia. But India can transmit messages between the two sides.
On June 14, 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Group of Seven (G7) summit in Italy. They discussed the development of bilateral relations between the two countries and the expansion of trade, in particular in the context of the Black Sea export corridor.
On July 8, Modi visited Moscow, where he met with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.
