Usyk received the award for the best fight of the year
During the award ceremony, Usyk thanked his fans, family, and team, and emphasized the importance of helping people and making them smile. However, his joking comment about his rival Tyson Fury, whom Usyk called his “best friend” and “greedy ass,” attracted the most attention.
“I want to say to my opponent, my best friend Tyson Fury: My friend, greedy belly, thank you very much. You're great, my opponent,” Usyk said in his address, demonstrating good humor and a friendly attitude despite the rivalry in the ring.
At the same time, ESPN's press release emphasizes that Usyk became the first undisputed heavyweight champion in almost 25 years after he inflicted the first defeat of his career on Fury in May 2024. The Ukrainian athlete won thanks to technical strikes and knocked Fury out for the first time in the ninth round.
“Usyk is our undisputed winner in the fight for the highest honor in the Hall of Fame after the best campaign of his career,” ESPN summarized, recognizing the Ukrainian's achievements as the best in the world of boxing.
