At least two thousand people have died as a result of dam damage and flooding in Libya
Ahmed Mismarie, a spokesman for the Libyan National Army (LNA), which controls eastern Libya, said during a televised press conference that the disaster occurred after a dam near Derna collapsed, causing "entire neighborhoods with their inhabitants to be washed away into the sea."
Mismarie estimated the number of people who lost contact at between 5,000 and 6,000.
Osama Hamad, the head of the parallel administration in the east, told local TV channels that the death toll had exceeded 2,000.
On September 10, Sunday, Storm Daniel passed over the Mediterranean Sea, causing flooding of roads and destruction of buildings in Derna, and damaging other settlements along the coast, including Libya's second largest city, Benghazi.
Libya is politically divided between East and West, and state institutions were destroyed after the 2011 uprising that led to a protracted conflict. The internationally recognized government based in Tripoli does not control the eastern regions.
