The National Bank has presented a new coin depicting Ukrainian borsch
The National Bank of Ukraine has unveiled a new commemorative 10-hryvnia coin, the Ukrainian Borsch. According to the bank's official website, the coin was put into circulation on September 29.
The Ukrainian Borsch coin is silver, with a face value of 10 hryvnias, a diameter of 38.6 mm, and a mintage of 2,500 pieces. The obverse features the small State Emblem of Ukraine, the year of issue and the denomination. The center depicts a housewife cooking borsch against a stove, symbolizing warmth, comfort, prosperity and traditions of Ukraine. The reverse features a stylized image dedicated to Ukrainian life and traditions, with a plate of borsch in the center.
The coin was designed by Mykola Kochubey and sculpted by Volodymyr Atamanchuk.
In 2022, UNESCO included Ukrainian borsch in the list of intangible cultural heritage in need of protection. This helps to popularize Ukrainian cultural and gastronomic traditions around the world.
The National Bank also presented other commemorative coins in 2023. "Air Defense - a Reliable Shield of Ukraine" in August and "Support Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine" in May. Both coins have a face value of 10 hryvnias.
