Biden orders government to share data on Russian war crimes in Ukraine with The Hague - NYT
U.S. President Joe Biden has secretly ordered the U.S. government to share data on war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine with the International Criminal Court, the New York Times reports, citing officials familiar with the matter.
Officials confirm that the move reflects a significant shift in US policy.
The media learned of Biden's order from officials familiar with the matter.
The officials explained that Biden's decision undermined the longstanding resistance of the Pentagon, which had been cautious about the move, fearing a precedent that would allow the prosecution of US military personnel.
According to information published by the New York Times, the United States has evidence that Russian officials have deliberately damaged civilian infrastructure in Ukraine, as well as forcibly deported Ukrainian children from the occupied territories.
According to the New York Times article, the Americans have already shared some of this information with Ukrainian prosecutors, but have not submitted it to the court in The Hague.
