19 years in a special regime colony. The US condemns Navalny's sentence in the "extremism" case
US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller has publicly condemned the sentence handed down to Russian politician Alexei Navalny, whom Russia accuses of being an "extremist." His statement, published on August 4 on the State Department's website, reflects US concerns about Russia's actions.
The State Department, through its spokesperson, condemned the "unfounded" charges against Alexei Navalny, whom the Russian authorities have accused of "extremism." Miller said that the Kremlin has long been trying to silence Navalny by declaring his case groundless and depriving him of due process.
It strongly condemns the detention of Navalny, Vladimir Kara-Murza and more than 500 other political prisoners in Russia, while calling for Navalny's release;
Navalny, who had returned to Russia from Germany where he had been recovering from poisoning, was detained and sentenced to real time on charges related to the Yves Rocher case. All his political projects in Russia were recognized as extremist and banned;
On August 4, the Moscow City Court sentenced Navalny to 19 years in a special regime colony in the "extremism" case.
