Barbie movie grosses over $1 billion at the global box office
The Barbie movie, an ambitious project by director Greta Gerwig, has stunned the world of box office by grossing an astronomical $1 billion in a short 17 days.
Details released by Variety show that of this amount, the film has earned $459 million in North America and $572 million in other countries. Thanks to this success, Gerwig becomes the first female director to reach such a height in the film industry.
The movie "Barbie" reached the billion-dollar mark 17 days after the premiere, thus breaking the record among other Warner Bros. films. Before that, the record holder was the final part of the Harry Potter saga - "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2", which raised $1 billion in 19 days.
On the movie screens, "Barbie" held the top spot for three weeks, despite competition from "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Lawlessness", "Meg 2: The Trench" and "Oppenheimer".
Recent news reports indicate that major Hollywood studios have uncovered a scheme to supply pirated versions of movies to Russian theaters. As a result, the premiere of Barbie and Oppenheimer in Russia is postponed until their digital release date.
