US extends temporary protection status for Ukrainians for another 18 months
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has extended the status of temporary protection for Ukrainians until April 19, 2025, due to a full-scale Russian invasion.
This decision was made against the backdrop of Russia's ongoing military invasion of Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis caused by this conflict. U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas emphasized the need to provide protection to Ukrainians who cannot return to their country because of the war.
In particular, the temporary protection program will be expanded for those Ukrainians who were already in the United States as of August 16, 2023. In addition, students from Ukraine who are studying in the United States and are in the country on an F-1 visa will now be able to apply for work permits and reduce their academic load without losing their visa while their temporary protection status is in effect.
Currently, about 26,000 Ukrainians enjoy temporary protection in the United States, and another 166,700 Ukrainians may be eligible for this status.
It is worth noting that in March of this year, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security already extended the stay of Ukrainian citizens who entered the United States under the United for Ukraine program until 2024. As of December 2022, more than 82,000 Ukrainians and their family members have used this program and entered the United States since the outbreak of full-scale war.
