Songs of Love and Freedom - A Celebration of Ukranian Music
February 24 marks two years since Russia’s unprovoked aggression against Ukraine. It is a grim anniversary–hundreds of thousands of lives ruined, cities destroyed, and countless cultural artifacts lost forever. Yet Ukraine stands tall and proud in the face of a horrific adversary. Even though its language and culture have been suppressed for centuries, Ukraine has persevered. It remains a country of rich musical heritage and tradition that is almost entirely unknown in the West. “Songs of Love and Freedom” is a program that spotlights music of exceptional beauty and lyricism. You will hear the heavenly sounds of Bandura–Ukraine’s iconic harp played by virtuosic master Valentyn Lysenko, and powerful folk songs performed by ethnomusicologist Inna Kovtun in collaboration with Linfield concert choir. Additionally, the program will include a world premiere of Piano Rhapsody on Ukrainian Themes by Alexander Rosenblatt and art songs by Mykola Lysenko, Vasyl Barvinsky, and Myroslav Volynsky performed by Dr. Anton Belov and Stanislav Serebriannikov.
