More than 700 km/h: a new speed record for a car is set in the USA
On the salt marshes of Lake Bonneville, the Speed Demon reached a speed of 537 km/h, setting a record during the SCTA Bonneville Speed Week 2023 event.
According to the Autoevolution website, over the 17 years of its existence, the Speed Demon set 13 SCTA Bonneville records and six FIA world records. The most impressive achievement was a speed of 775 km/h, a record for a piston-engine car. The car also repeatedly exceeded the 644 km/h mark.
Professional pilot Chris Raschke was behind the wheel of the Speed Demon during the record-breaking race. He managed to accelerate the car to 537 km/h over a distance of 4.8 km, setting a world record.
But not everything went smoothly at SCTA Bonneville Speed Week 2023. Strong winds blew water from a nearby lake onto the race track.
The organizers decided to reduce the distance of the race to 4.8 km for the safety of the participants. Because of this, Speed Demon was unable to accelerate to the expected 805 km/h.
