A New Program for Refugees in the USA - "Welcome Corps"
Soon Americans will be able to give private financial support to refugees in the USA. U.S. Department of State calls this decision the boldest one in the last 4 decades. "Welcome Corps" gives an opportunity to get a green card and citizenship.
Groups of at least 5 people will collect $2,275 for each refugee to provide patronage during the first three months including housing, health insurance, education and other necessary things. They plan to transport over 5,000 refugees during the first year of the new program.
However, this will not solve the problems of Ukrainians who used the "U4U" program because it does not provide any status. This was a concern when the program was being created, but it was necessary to act quickly, explained Naomi Steinberg, vice president of US policy and advocacy at HIAS.
Lawyers do not exclude the possibility that Ukrainians can become legal after the end of the "U4U" program. They can obtain the status through employment, family ties with the US citizens or receiving asylum due to the threat to life in one's own country.
