Trump has spent more than $40 million this year on his defense in courts - WP
The political group of former US President Donald Trump reported spending nearly $40.2 million on legal defense of Trump and his team during the first half of 2023, The Washington Post reports.
The relevant financial data should be officially submitted by Trump's political organization, Save America.
The legal defense costs were higher than other expenditures by the Trump group during his 2024 presidential campaign. Additionally, federal documents filed in July show that the Trump campaign raised about $56 million in the second quarter of 2023, when Trump was facing federal charges in Florida, New York, and the possibility of additional charges in Washington, D.C., and Fulton County, Georgia.
Trump's advisors explained that the cost of legal services for a large number of individuals is necessary and will "grow exponentially" as the investigation progresses, trials are scheduled, and new charges are filed.
They also claim that the majority of the funds raised came from small donors who are Trump supporters across the country. The political alliance noted that they cover the legal costs of almost everyone involved in the investigation or seeking help from the former president and his team.
Campaign finance expert Paul Seamus noted that Trump had plenty of opportunities to spend money on legal fees. "This is an astronomical amount of money. But the final decision is up to the donors - whether they want their money to be spent in this way. I believe that if you support Trump financially in 2023, it's fine with you," he said.
On June 13, Trump was indicted on charges of keeping confidential documents. According to the indictment, Trump kept classified documents and provided access to them to unauthorized persons at least twice.
It is worth mentioning that the storming of the Capitol took place on January 6, 2021, when Trump's supporters stormed the Congressional building during the scheduled confirmation of Joe Biden's victory in the presidential election. The incident resulted in the deaths of five people and the injury of more than 100 police officers. Four police officers involved in the events later committed suicide.
